La Cordée started out in 1953. Originally founded as a cooperative, it sold fairly priced Scout uniforms. During its first ten years in business, it served the needs of the Scout community.
The shift toward outdoor sports
Over the years, a wider customer base, attracted by a growing selection of specialized products, visited the store. From then, La Cordée rapidly became the undisputed leader in the sale of products for outdoor sports in Quebec.
In its first days serving the general public, La Cordée specialized in camping gear and offered light equipment to customers interested in hiking. It is also during the sixties that climbing equipment appeared in Quebec and that the store became a meeting point for climbers of all regions of the province.
In the early seventies, La Cordée played an active role in the development of cross-country skiing, at a time where thousands of Quebecers were discovering this activity. Many skiers then Norge skis, which La Cordée imported exclusively from Norway and which were considered for a long time, the best skis available. It is also during this time that La Cordée moved to current address on rue Ste-Catherine.
During the eighties, the company imposed itself as a leading bicycle retailer in the Montreal region. For a long time the single cycling specialist in the province, La Cordée was also a pioneer for introducing the mountain bike here : they were available in its shops as early as 1985. It is also at that time that the status of the organization changed and that La Cordée officially got its business title. In 1982, the Fondation scoute La Cordée was created to manage the profits that the shop generated. Dedicated to helping the youth, this non-profit organization gave its support to Scouts du Montréal métropolitain and started a scholarship program.
It was in the nineties that the Retour aux Sources Program was born. Initially, the idea was to sell t-shirts to raise funds for the develoment of various outdoor recreational activities. People responded so favorably that it was decided that the company would use a portion of the proceeds from the sale of its homemade products to support various initiatives in that field. Since 1997, La Cordée invests 1% of the sales of its branded products in the the Retour aux Sources Program, which supports the development and maintenance of outdoor sports facilities in Quebec.
