>At least six climbers are dead on 22,998-foot Khan Tengri in Kyrgyzstan after an ice avalanche smashed into a large group around 6 a.m. on Aug. 5. The avalanche killed five Czechs and one Russian, and at least five other climbers are missing. Fourteen people were injured, including two that had to be evacuated by helicopter.

The accident occurred in about the same spot as a 1993 avalanche that killed four people on Khan Tengri, as huge ice blocks cleaved from a neighboring peak. In 1990, 43 climbers were killed on Peak Lenin in Kyrgyzstan, the deadliest mountaineering incident in history.
