Writing is Climbing’s heart, and we pride ourselves on running the best climbing articles in the world. We work with both professionals and first-time writers, as long as they have an authentic and compelling story to tell.

We’re very open on subject and style as long as your story is previously unpublished and has something to do with climbing.

Our feature stories, the premium writing in the magazine, generally run 1500 to 3500 words and have a strong photographic component. We occasionally run particularly powerful prose by itself, without photos, often with an illustration. We’re interested in stories that give deep insight into places and the people who climb at an area. Area histories, profiles of notable or unknown climbers, controversial issues, and first-person accounts are fair game. Humorous or unusual tales are especially welcome.

We also run shorter, department pieces about standard-setting climbs, access issues, relevant political events, new faces on the scene, equipment, as well as helpful tips on climbing harder, safer, smarter, or with greater enjoyment. Check a current issue of the magazine for the length and style of pieces within particular departments and refine your query accordingly.
