Hong Kong is Asia's financial hub for international commerce, and gateway to the burgeoning economic superpower that is China. One would think a place that boasts the highest density of Mercedes Benzes in the world, a sparse land of mind-boggling property prices, a sprawling concrete jungle of mega malls, criss-crossing roads and sky scraping buildings, would have absolutely nothing healthy or outdoorsy to offer the weekend warrior. But there is rock climbing and in abundance too!
Although Hong Kong is only 1,104 sq km in size, the entire gamut of tropical climbing activities are available; sport (indoors and outdoors), traditional, multi-pitch, bouldering (indoors and outdoors), and of course urban climbing (buildering).
It took many years, but climbing is finally entering the mainstream here. Specialty stores like RC Outfitters in MongKok have sprung up, offering the latest paraphernalia to go along with the wonderful addiction. Climbing equipment in general is comparatively much cheaper here because there's no sales tax, and with Hong Kong's currency pegged to the US dollar, there's less fear of rate fluctuations. This allows shops to mark down prices and compete very aggressively. With increasing exposure, coupled with the willingness of enthusiasts to explore and open new areas, it is hoped that Hong Kong will rival Krabi one day in terms of versatility, and number of noteworthy routes.
