Steve McClure - The Full Interview

McClure coming out of the Rainshadow, Malham Cove, Yorkshire, UK.

What would it take for the world-class international climbing community to come to Raven Tor and try your routes?
It would take one world-class climber to come and do the routes, combined with some good weather. The UK has some great sport climbing. Foreign wads used to come over all the time, but then sort of forgot about it when Spain and France got awesome. Look at the Red River as a comparison — everyone knew it was good, but no one really went until now. You can be sure that after the Petzl Trip the place will be on the map!

What would your best friend say is your strongest personality trait?
I’m pretty reliable. I generally do what I say I’ll do.

What's your favorite: bouldering, sport climbing, traditional climbing, ice climbing, gym climbing, or alpine climbing? Why?
Climbing is such a broad sport; few people can say they are experienced in all areas. There are a lot of things I want to try. My favorite depends on what is going on in my life — it’s moved and changed a lot. Initially, when I was around 14, it was all traditional stuff, exploring Britain. There is so much and such variation in a small area. I was well into multi-pitch stuff and did a bit in the Alps, some mixed stuff, but it was always actual rock climbing I was fascinated by.
But performance wasn’t the driving force; I just wanted to climb really great routes. From the start, though, I knew I wasn’t into really dangerous stuff; I wouldn’t take big risks, they’d be calculated. It was the movement that gave me the buzz. I was 24 when I first really clipped bolts, and it was a bit of a revelation--being able to move free of fear and climbing to your max, pushing right on and committing 100 percent even when there’s only a one percent chance of success. I guess with that came the performance thing, too. It’s addictive to feel like you’re climbing hard; the closer to your max you get the bigger the buzz.
