Did you find anything else while you were there?
Yeah, I bolted another line to the left of Realization. It’s pretty hard. A little too hard, actually — really too hard for me right now.
How long have you been on the road?
Around 10 years.
Would you even say that you’ve got a home?
I have a room in Santa Cruz, but I’m really only there a week out of every three months. It’s just kind of my lifestyle these. You’ve just got to enjoy it while it’s like this. One day I’ll settle down.
Anyone who’s spent a lot of time on the road knows that you’ve got to keep it simple. What’s currently packed in your bag?
I have a car in Europe with all my stuff in it and a car here with the same stuff. So I’ve got rope, draws, harness some clothes. I can just pack a daypack when I fly over to Europe. I’ve got the car parked at a friend’s. A lot of times I’m just floating between airports and hotels, and I’ve just got a daypack… oh, and a toothbrush.
Do you ever find it hard to keep up your enthusiasm for travel? Lost psyche?
For me it’s definitely like that. I go through phases where I’m more motivated than other times. That’s just natural. I don’t think I could be motivated all the time — it’s just part of the lifestyle. I’ve been doing it for so long that I’m pretty accustomed to it. It’s hard sometimes, but it’s what I know.
I have a lot of friends around the world. When I’m at a place, I can stay at a buddy’s house. The hardest part is when you’re at an airport or in transit. When you’ve been traveling on a plane for a day, or a bus, or you’ve slept in five different places in five days, it wears on you, for sure. It’s good to get to a place and settle in for a little bit. That’s totally dictated by the temperature, the time of year, where the next project is.
