New and Notable: Metolius Climbing Offset Master Cams – 2010 Gear Guide
Just when it seemed like thin-crack pro couldn’t get any sleeker or more specialized, the innovators at Metolius Climbing introduced Offset Master Cams, an update to the single-stem units that tweaks them perfectly for flares, pin scars, and other singular placements. The Offsets come in six sizes — No. 00 through No. 5 — and offer the same narrow head profile, Metolius’ Range Finder, custom-molded thumb piece, flexible single stem (for deeper placement and to minimize walking), and space-age hand-milled veneer. Slung with 3mm Monster Sling webbing and made of CNCmachined 7075-T6 aluminum, the cams are also CE/UIAA certified.
- SPLIT PERSONALITY
These Master Cams have a one-size offset: two lobes on one side of the head are one size, while the two on the other side are a size smaller. The set’s six sizes offer lobes starting at No. 00 and ranging up to No. 5.
- TWO TONE
To help keep track of your offsets, the swage tubing is color-coded for the larger two lobes, while the sling is color-coded for the smaller ones. The contrasting colors make it easy to spot the piece on your rack.
- GET FLEXIBLE
The flexible single-stem design has a narrow insertion profile for greater depth and versatility in thin placements than a U-shaped design, and for utility in horizontals. Couple that with the power of the offset, and you have broader and more bomber options in fussy flares, asymmetrical fissures, and irregular pin scars.
