Video by Eric Perlman / MastersofStone.com - EXCERPT FROM MASTERS OF STONE 6 COMING SPRING 2009 - Despite the intensity of gunning for the speed record, Hans throws a barrel roll as he launches into the King Swing... supposedly to clear a twisted line, but, in fact, just for the fun of it. These guys are relaxed, pausing to ask permission and chat with other teams as they gently pass by. At the Headwall bolt ladder Yuji senses that breaking the record is far from certain. He uncorks some serious speed, running it out 60 feet and more, not even bothering to clip bolts despite the obvious death fall onto the headwall ledge if he slips. After 2 hours and 40 minutes of non-stop, redline effort, Yuji increases his pace, climbing with a quickdraw clamped between his teeth. They're 2800 feet off the ground yet the air is so still, the cheering of the crowd reverberates across the wall.
