A Botanic Surprise in the Mosquito Range

By Richard F. Fleck

I have never before seen such a large cluster of this succulent plant being over ten square feet in size under a protected cove of Cameron Peak, Colorado. Photo by Andrew Fyon

Between Mount Cameron and Lincoln

On a north-facing slope just below

Fourteen thousand feet, I am surprised

To discover a charming piece of tundra

Reminding me of dusty, deserty prairie

Far below where cactus and yucca grow.

But up here I stop to admire an entire

Colony of succulent dwarf mulleins with

Delicate pinkish blossoms blooming forth

From fleshly rosettes of greenish-yellow

Sepals housed in a very dry and stony soil

So high above such vast and open space.
