15-Year-Old Redpoints Era Vella (5.14d)
8/6/12 – Polish climber Piotr Schab has climbed his first 5.14d with Era Vella in Margalef, Spain. More notable than the grade is Schab’s age—he’s only 15 years old. (He’ll turn 16 later this month.)
Perhaps one of the most prominent of its grade in Spain, Era Vella was estalished by Chris Sharma in May 2010. It quickly saw repeats by such climbers as Ramón Julian Puigblanque, David Firnenburg, and Adam Ondra. Sasha DiGiulian was the first woman to climb Era Vella in April 2012, her second of the grade.
Schab put about seven days of efforts into Era Vella. Previously, his hardest route to date was Batalion Skala (5.14c), at a crag in Poland. On this same trip to Spain, Schab climbed Combifetis (5.14b), Aitzol (5.14b), and Xiketeta (5.13d, onsight), among others.
Date of ascent: August 4, 2012
