The PATAGONIA SPEED ASCENT JACKET ($375, patagonia.com) is a gearhead’s wet dream: it’s low in bulk/weight and allows for serious movement, but is also incredibly warm. Of course, it wouldn’t be Patagonia’s style to stop there — they also added green to the list: the Speed Ascent’s double-weave stretch-polyester shell is not only wind- and water-resistant, it’s also 100 percent recycled. (The R2® lining, a super-warm, furry insulation, is 40 percent recycled.) Other cool features include stitch-free seams (lowering bulk and upping water resistance), water-repellent zippers, articulated arms for freer movement, and reinforced shoulders, elbows, and forearms. This breathable, high-tech mid/outer layer will climb with you on winter’s bitterest days. Also available are the Speed Ascent Pants: $325.
