Armenian First Ascent Open Festival: May 21-31, 2011
The Armenian First Ascent Open Festival was first held in July 2009. This festival, organized by local climbing club “Up The Rocks,” is intended to develop the rock climbing culture in Armenia, while at the same time promoting climbing at the local rock formations through the development of new routes.

14th Annual Yank-N-Yard Climbing Comp, Stone Age Climbing Gym
The Yank-n-Yard has become a long standing tradition at Stone Age, and it has grown every year for 14 years running. This year will be bigger and better than ever with fresh holds, crazy features, an outdoor climbing zone, a huge prize raffle, and the largest cash purse ever seen in New Mexico. This year we are offering two levels of competition: Open and Citizens. There will be a men’s and a women’s category in each. The Citizens level will be subdivided into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced categories.
Triple Crown Bouldering Series 2010 – Hound Ears Wrap-up
This past Saturday kicked off the first leg of the 2010 Triple Crown Bouldering Series at the Hound Ears boulders in Boone, North Carolina. Taking place within Hound Ears Club’s gated golf-resort community, the access-magicians of Triple Crown get this normally-closed area opened to climbers once a year through participation in the Triple Crown bouldering competition.
Kurt Albert Memorial Service
A memorial service for Kurt Albert will be held on Oct 9 in Streitberg, Germany. In addition, a fund has been set up in Albert’s name that will be used to cover costs associated with Kurt’s death, with the remainder donated to one of the climbing causes in his local climbing area, the Frankenjura.
2010 REEL ROCK Film Tour
The fifth annual REEL ROCK Film Tour launching in September 2010 brings the best in climbing and adventure films to local audiences across the globe. REEL ROCK shows are spirited events where climbers and outdoors lovers come together to celebrate and sample the ultimate in adventure filmmaking. Prize giveaways, appearances by top climbers, and fundraising for non-profit organizations are always part of the party at REEL ROCK events.
10th Annual Flagstaff TRASH BASH
The 10th Annual Flagstaff TRASH BASH will be happening on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, and you know it will be raining booty. So mark your calendar, recruit/brainwash some friends, and head up to the summit to pick up trash, eat dinner, drink beverages, and walk away with the goods. The trash cleanup starts with the raffle sign-up around 5 p.m. (after work) at the Flagstaff Mountain Summit. To get there, go about three miles up Flagstaff Road, take a right on Flagstaff Summit Road, and drive to the Flagstaff Summit parking lot. Look for “The Stone Shelter” to the west of the lot.
2010 3rd Annual Pine Mountain Pull Down

Boulder Premiere of 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless
On Thursday, July 15, 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless, will show at the Boulder Theater. The story follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of one of the most unique and prolific environmentalists of our time — Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and his friend Doug Tompkins — as they travel 5,000 miles from California to Patagonia. His hope is simply to find unclimbed mountains and unridden waves in the spirit of his heroes.
24 Hours of Gunnison Glory Wrap-Up
“Do you know what it’s like to climb 24 hours straight, pitch after pitch on demanding, technical granite till your tips pink out, feet swell, and mouth dries up like the ass end of the Swahili? Well, let me tell you . . . er, actually, I only made it to hour 22.5 at the launch of the friendly new competition: the 24 Hours of Gunnison Glory, held at Hartman Rocks, west of Gunnison, Colorado. But even turning in our scorecards 1.5 hours shy of the finishing line, we came to know the experience. And the thing is, it’s a tough but extremely rewarding one.” This sentiment offered in 2009 by Matt Samet (former editor of Climbing Magazine) was and will always be an amazing summary of the 24 hours of Gunnison Glory, an Endurance Climbing Festival designed with everyone in mind.
Vibram Natural Games 2010
Vibram Natural Games will be back from the 24th of June to the 27th of June 2010 in Millau, the European outdoor sports capital. This year, the Gravity Trip, much more eclectic, will succeed the Roc trip. Besides a gathering at the Boffi’s cliff, there will be a bouldering contest on the Official Village (the event’s center). This year, novelties appear: For the cliff, Ultimate routes could be tried by all the competitors and not only by professional climbers.
Wrangle in the Triangle Bouldering Competition
It’s back, it’s bigger, and you must be there! On June 19th, Triangle Rock Club will be hosting the 3rd annual “Wrangle in the Triangle” Indoor Climbing Competition. With thousands of dollars in prizes and fun festivities planned throughout the day, we are looking forward to a rock’n good time. Canadian Youth Climbing Nationals Wrap-up: June 4-6
Délire centre d’escalade in Québec City hosted the C.E.C. Youth Nationals this year on the weekend of June 4, 5, and 6. This year 123 young athletes took part – most of them travelling from Western Canada. The routesetters did an amazing job of separating the pack, and no Super Finals were needed. Thank you to everyone who was part of the routesetting crew. True North’s own Dustin Curtis flew to Québec to set routes, then dashed off to Vail, Colorado, to represent Canada in the IFSC World Cup Bouldering Competition at the Teva Mountain Games.

Breashears will also present The Rowell Award for the Art of Adventure to explorer and writer Craig Childs.
Rock Junior 2010 Report
If the first day of the Rock Junior was a marathon, the second couldn’t have been more action packed, with climbing of course. Beneath the beautiful Garda Trentino sun and the legendary Lake Garda breeze, the Arco Climbing Stadium witnessed another day to be remembered. It all kicked off extremely early, and the first to arrive, as if they were in need of a good dose of climbing, were the teams of the Under 14 Cup.
Teva Mountain Games 2010 Climbing Events
The Vail Valley Foundation is proud to announce the climbing events for the 9th annual Teva Mountain Games, the nation’s largest outdoor adventure event, which will return to Vail, Colorado, June 3 – 6, 2010. In addition to the amateur climbing competitions, Teva Mountain Games will host the IFSC Bouldering World Cup, the only World Cup event on U.S. soil.
24 Hours of Gunnison Glory – 2010
The goals of the 24HGG are to secure the future of climbing in Gunnison, CO and to offer climbers everywhere the chance to push their physical, mental, and spiritual abilities while climbing for 24 hours straight. On May 29-30, 2010 Colorado’s own 24 hour endurance climbing festival (based on Arkansas’ 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell competition) will commence at the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area — a 8,000 acre precambrian granite playground.

Gunks Climbers Coalition to Host Waterworks Fundraiser
For nearly six years, the Mohonk Preserve and the Gunks Climbers Coalition have worked in conjunction with OSI and the Town of Rosendale to secure the purchase, transfer, and access to one of the Gunks most revered areas, the Waterworks Boulders. It finally seems that access is truly going to come to fruition soon enough, but your help is still needed. While the land purchase has been arranged, the management costs have not. And this is where the good of the people comes in.

2010 SCS Southeast Regional Championship Wrap-Up
On Saturday May 8, 2010, Urban Rocks Gym hosted the SCS Regionals Championship. This was the first competition of its kind in Chattanooga, and Urban Rocks was happy to support USA Climbing and the Sport Climbing Series. Emily Taylor, the southeast regional coordinator, worked in conjunction with Urban Rocks owners, Chris Gibson and Becky Robran, to put on the most exciting competition that we have had to date.
The seventh edition of the world’s biggest international bouldering meeting took place last weekend in the picturesque val Masimo and val di Mello valleys, Italy. Although every weather forecast last week led to inclement weather during the weekend, the young and multi-colored international crowd of boulderers did not miss their appointment. There were more than 2,000 registered participants, and more than 3,500 people in the valley altogether.
The Northwest Collegiate Climbing Competition Series
The Northwest Collegiate Climbing Competition Series (NC3) has pioneered intercollegiate climbing, while demonstrating an increase in participation and recognition each year. This year’s events will be the largest to date with an estimated 1500 participants and spectators from around the northwest. The series allows college students to experience multiple levels of competitive sport while fostering growth in the climbing community.

Urban Rocks Gym Hosts Chattanooga’s First Indoor Sport Climbing Competition
On Saturday, March 27th, approximately two hundred people arrived bright and early to get checked in and ready for Chattanooga’s first indoor sport climbing competition. By 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Urban Rocks Gym filled with activity of at least six different climbing teams. Out of 77 competitors, some were already tied in getting ready for their first climb of the day, while the climbing teams warmed up with synchronized jumping jacks and a pep talk to get psyched about the competition awaiting them.

The AscenDance Project
AscenDance Project is a new company founded in January of 2006 by German born performance artist and rock climber Isabel von Rittberg to create work that explores the aesthetics of climbing. Performing entirely without the use of ropes, their work exhibits strength and grace enhanced by the effects of gravity on the dancers and their ability to overcome it. 2010 Chandler Mountain Challenge – Bouldering Comp Weekend

Bendler, Russians Continue their Ice Climbing Dominance
Austria’s Markus Bendler and France’s Stephanie Maureau have claimed victories in the men’s and women’s Lead competitions of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup held in Saas Fee, Switzerland on January 22 and 23, 2010. Athletes Jeong Woon Wha and Hee Yong Park made a strong showing for Korea, both taking medals in Lead. Russians remained unbeatable in the Speed events capturing the top three spots in both the men’s and women’s events, with Pavel Gulyaev for the men and Maryam Filippova for the women coming first.

The Disciples of Gill – Bouldering Film Retrospective at Neptune Mountaineering
A presentation brought to you by Pat Ament on January 28 at 7 p.m. – In the 1960’s there was a small sub-culture of climbers who went against the traditional mountaineering mentality. Headed by John Gill, a few climbers devoted themselves to bouldering and turned it into a kind of gymnastic art. Successful conclusion to first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship
The first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship has been concluded in Saas Grund, Switzerland on January 16th, 2010. The men’s overall winner was Russia’s Alexey Iakovlev. Pianos Rachados 2009 – A New Crack Climbing Event in Portugal
Portugal climbing is best known for its excellent limestone cliffs next to the ocean, providing hard, overhanging sport routes, but not its trad climbing… But now, near to Lisbon, south of the surfing mecca, Ericeira, an outstandingly gorgeous cliff of black basalt with perfect splitter cracks was recently discovered. MetroRock’s Dark Horse Series – Event 2
Continuing the recent progression of world class bouldering competitions in the NorthEast, MetroRock just finished the second stop of its four comp Dark Horse Series. On December 12th, over 200 competitors and spectators showed up to compete for the Dark Horse title. The top six competitors in each Open category advanced to finals in the evening to battle over the $1,100 cash purse.
SuperTopo Auction to Benefit Access Fund
The 2008 SuperTopo Charity Auctions raised over $10,000 for climbing non-profits and Central Asia Institute. In 2009, as you can imagine, has been much harder to get to that number. BUT, that wont stop me from trying with one last auction for 2009 with all the proceeds benefiting the Access Fund.

U of Utah Students Take Home the “Top Climber” Title at Westminster’s Intercollegiate Climbing Wall Competition
Two students from the University of Utah once again took home bragging rights as “top boulderers” at Westminster College’s second annual intercollegiate climbing wall competition November 17, 2009. More than 40 students from colleges throughout the state, including Westminster College, University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, Utah Valley University and Salt Lake Community College participated in the contest – the largest group to compete thus far.

8th Annual HERA Climb4Life Utah Raises Over $80,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research
Rock climbing has never felt so empowering, or at least that was the sentiment expressed by everyone participating in the 8th annual HERA Climb4Life Utah, held Sept. 17-20 in Salt Lake City. Over $80,000 was raised by participants and volunteers, which will support the HERA (Health, Empowerment, Research, Awareness) Women’s Cancer Foundation’s ovarian cancer research and awareness initiatives.

Bloqueando 2009 – Event Report
Since 2007 this boulderer gathering has been the ultimate event for Bolivian climbers with a good mix of exciting problems, friendship and a party environment. The Valley of the Rocks, or Valle De Las Rocas, is located 750 km south of La Paz and 150 km away from the city of Uyuni. This place has been described by the French boulder Tony Lamiche as the El Dorado of bouldering areas.

2009 ARCO ROCK LEGENDS AWARD CERMONY
Chris Sharma won the Salewa Rock Award and Kilian Fischhuber won the La Sportiva Competition Award – The Salewa Rock Award and the La Sportiva Competition Award were handed out in front of a packed crowd which went wild as the Jury’s verdict for the climbing Oscars were announced; for the rock category the 17 international specialized magazines had chosen Chris Sharma, alias the King, while the competition category went to none other than Kilian Fischhuber.

First Annual Tribute climb for Federico Campanini
On August 23, Federico Campanini’s wife, Amber Christensen, as well as friends, colleagues and members of the climbing community, will climb Mt. Rainier as a tribute to Federico Campanini, a professional mountain guide, who lost his life in the recent tragedy on Mt. Aconcagua in January of this year.

New Routes at the Armenian First Ascent Open Festival
From July 1-31, 2009 the ‘Arev’ (Sun) Armenian First Ascent Open Festival, organized by the Up the Rocks club, took place in five locations in Armenia: Hrazdan Gorge, Noravank Canyon, Hell’s Canyon, Arpa Gorge and Garni Gorge. 2009 Vaude Deutscher Bouldercup – Überlingen, Germany
The annual Deutscher Bouldercup, this year sponsored by the German companies Vaude and Edelrid, among others, was held in Überlingen, Germany on July 11, 2009. The outdoor competition saw some top bouldering competitors, including Kilian Fischhuber (an Austrian who wasn’t competing in an official capacity, for some reason) and the German Jonas Baumann, both of whom have won several World Cups.

2009 International Climbers’ Festival
The International Climbers’ Festival is back for a 16th straight year! The 2009 Festival will be held this July 8th – 12th in Lander, Wyoming. The ICF is a non-profit and is connected to three local Lander climbing initiatives: the Jim Ratz Memorial Scholarship, the Todd Skinner Foundation and BARF (the local Bolt and Anchor Replacement Fund).

On Saturday, April 25th, 2009, MetroRock’s towering walls teemed with climbers of all abilities crimping and pinching their way to the finish of 17 routes in a day. Any particular reason? International Kalymnos Climbing Festival
The International Kalymnos Climbing Festival will be held on May 22-26, 2009, on the scenic and tranquil island of Kalymnos, Greece. The event will be organized by the Municipality of Kalymnos. Climbers of all abilities and from all countries are welcome to attend the event.

Westminster College’s First-Ever Intercollegiate Climbing Competition
On November 18, 2008, in Salt Lake City, Utah, college students — with focus and determination — from across the state competed for the title of “best boulderer” at Westminster College’s first-ever climbing wall competition. Tye Watkins and Lizzie Nielson, both students at the University of Utah, took first place honors in the men’s and women’s divisions beating out more than 30 other students.

Bolivia Rock Star Festival
On November 1st, 2008 at the Amor de Dios Neighborhood in the Aramjuez area of La Paz, the First Rock Star Festival took place. The Vertigo Climbing Club, who organized this event, created a competition based on a triathlon theme where competitors would do a 4 kilometer run, a 60 meter zip line and climb ten routes. The AAC’s Craggin’ Classic – Recap
The American Alpine Club and its industry partners pulled out all the stops for the first annual Craggin’ Classic. On October 9th Layton Kor provided the perfect lead-in to the festival, with the AAC and Neptune Mountaineering hosting his first slideshow in many moons. A packed house of 1,200 climbers filled CU Boulder’s Macky Auditorium for the kick-off event, enjoying tales from Kor’s remarkable climbing career.

2008 New River Rendezvous
The word is out — rock climbers know how to throw a great party! May 16-18 the New River Rendezvous Festival kicks off the climbing season at the New River Gorge in Fayetteville, West Virginia. For years it was pretty low key, until 2007 when 1,200 climbers crashed the three-day event.

This year’s Rendezvous was the fifth and by far largest event. Over 1,200 people showed up from across the eastern half of the country, pitched more than 350 tents at the massive, bowl shaped National Park Service (NPS) campground known as Burnwood, and enjoyed the West “By God” Virginia hospitality that infused every bit of the Rendezvous from top to bottom.

Triple Crown 2006 Stone Fort Recap
The enthusiastic rock-fondling horde was efficiently whisked up the mountain to the Montlake Golf Course in a line of Big Yellow Buses, and the competition started the moment everyone stepped off. A line of pads with legs strolled the 100 yards down the hill to branch out and wander among the melted marshmallows of grey stone, each offering its own intriguing arrangement of shapes and angles.

2006 Rifle Clean-up Recap
September 30, 2006 – It is a long-standing tradition here at Climbing to aid in keeping Rifle Mountain Park clean for climbers and our combined public perception. Every year at the end of September we host the annual Rifle clean-up, during which climbers are invited to help clean the park and later enjoy a BBQ and party courtesy of Climbing. October 14th, 2006—Fort Collins, Co: The 2006 Neptune Mountaineering Horsetooth Hang is going to be the best festival so far. For those unfamiliar with the event, the “Hang” as it is commonly known is a non-profit bouldering festival and trash clean-up that takes place at the world famous boulders of Horsetooth Reservoir.

June 15, 2006 – Joshua Tree, CA: Environmental group, Friends of Joshua Tree, will host the 10th annual Climb Smart event at Indian Cove group campground, October 27-29, 2006 in Joshua Tree National Park.

The 13th Annual International Climbers’ Festival will be held July 5th through the 9th featuring slideshows, clinics, trade fair, parties and of course world-class climbing. This year we are very excited to host Patagonia Ambassador SonnieTrotter as our keynote presenter.
3rd annual Butte Bouldering Bonanza
The Butte Bouldering Bonanza will be back once again this year with good energy, new events, and a challenge for every climber that visits. Held at the Skyland boulders in the friendly little village of Crested Butte this event is grassroots, organized by climbers who love to see the climbing community come together.
Crack Yourself Up at Splitter Camp
This climbing season, join renowned instructors and hone your skills at Splitter Camp: three-day intensive crack climbing seminars offered this spring and fall in Indian Creek, Utah. Splitter Camp offers six sessions, with three spring and three fall seminars. 2006 Teva Mountain Games
Vail, CO, May 31 – June 4, 2006- TMG represents the nation’s largest venue for a bouldering competition, with 28,000 spectators expected throughout the weekend.The largest prize purse for any climbing competition in the US with a combined cash purse of $16,000 distributed to winners of the difficulty bouldering, speed bouldering, and freestyle dyno divisions.
2006 Hueco Rock Rodeo
The Hueco Rock Rodeo, Februrary 25, is the by far the loudest, sickest, and most raging outdoor bouldering competition in the nation. It’s the one day a year where large groups are allowed to roam almost unchecked in the best boulder fields of North America: Hueco Tanks State Historical Site, Texas.

2/17/06 – As ice climbers converge from around the world on the famed Festiglace, held just south of Quebec city, Mother Nature has prepared an alpine welcome. Blizzards and other weather obstacles clog many of the Midwestern and Northeastern travel hubs, and here, outside our traveling headquarters at the Gite a Emilie in Neuville, snow is blowing sideways across the ice-choked St. Laurence River … which is a welcome change from this morning’s sleet.
Triple Crown Bouldering Series
Jim Horton and Chad Wykle once again have brought to the Southeast the biggest and badest outdoor bouldering competitions, the Triple Crown Bouldering Series. Hound Ears – October 1st, 2005, Horse Pens 40th – November 5th, 2005, and Little Rock City – January 7th, 2006. These extremely intense competitions provide climbers with anywhere from six to eight hours to climb the 10 hardest problems their body will allow.
Houndears Triple Crown Bouldering Series
10/01/05 – Houndears, the first of the Southeastern Bouldering Series Triple Crown, took place above the million-dollar gated community of the Houndears Golf Club outside Boone, North Carolina.
2005 Horsetooth Hang Bouldering Festival
10/23/05 – After four long years, the Neptune Mountaineering Horsetooth Hang Bouldering Festival is back and here to stay. On October 23rd, 160 climbers and volunteers from all over Colorado came together for a spectacular day of festivities and fun at Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins.
2nd Annual Butte Bouldering Bonanza
8/1/05 – This past weekend the 2nd Annual Butte Bouldering Bonanza took place in Crested Butte, Colorado. While still a young event, there was no lack of enthusiasm and we had a blast checking it out.
Roc Trip – 2005 – Squamish, BC
6/24/05 – 6/26/05 – This gathering, the third event of its kind in North America, brings some of world’s best climbers and the climbing public together to celebrate climbing in a fun, laid-back atmosphere while raising money for local climbing area conservation efforts.

7/08/05 – The outlook for Lander, Wyoming is scorchio. In Spain, the word describes broiling days in the Iberian Peninsula, but this weekend it could be applied to the high desert of southern Wyoming.

We couldn’t get enough of DJ LaFouche’s music on Saturday night! With the help of Sahid Belhaj on Flute/Triangle/Bongos, Timmy O’Neill on Bongos and Guillaume Broust on the video deck, LaFouche kept people in rhythm and on the floor until we closed The Howe Sound Brewery & Inn down about 2AM.

For those of you who have never been here before, the ICF is a non-competitive event where climbers get together, hit the crag, have some fun and celebrate our favorite sport.
