Much-Eyed Face on Kamet Finally Climbed
11/24/08 - Japanese climbers Kazuya Hiraide and Kei Taniguchi have completed the first ascent of the 6,000-foot southeast face of Kamet (7,756m/25,446') in northern India. 11/21/08 - Rob Pizem and Pete Vintoniv have free-climbed the wildly overhanging northeast arête of the Shark’s Fin in Utah’s Monument Basin at 5.12 R. 11/21/08 - Adam Ondra has made the second ascent of Open Air at Austria’s Schleier Wasserfall, a route first done when Ondra was only three years old. 11/21/08 - Stéphane Benoist and Patrice Glairon-Rappaz climbed a new, direct route up the south face of 7,861-meter (25,791-foot) Nuptse in Nepal, before halting at the summit ridge in the face of extreme cold. 11/21/08 - Japanese climbers Kazuaki Amano, Fumitaka Ichimura, and Yusuke Sato have climbed the north face of Kalanka (6,931 meters/22,740 feet) in India's Garhwal Himalaya. 11/14/08 - Joseph Puryear and David Gottlieb have made the first ascent of the previously unclimbed peak Kang Nachugo (6,735 meters) in the Rolwaling Himal, Nepal. 11/10/08 - Carlos Buhler and Joan Solé Rovirosa have climbed a new alpine route on the East Face of Cerro Castillo in the Aysen region of Cerro Castillo National Reserve, Chilean Patagonia. 11/07/08 - Camilo Lopez and Anna Pfaff have made two possible first ascents in India’s Miyar Valley. 11/04/08 - Jimmy Webb has secured a solid victory at this year’s Horse Pens 40 competition on leg two of the 2008 Triple Crown Bouldering Series presented by Marmot. 10/31/08 - The 15-year-old Czech super-climber Adam Ondra has made the first onsight of Hotel Supramonte, a 10 pitch limestone 5.14a, on Italy’s island of Sardinia. 10/27/08 - Ethan Benjamin Pringle, usually known for his hard sport and boulder ascents, has redpointed Boulder Canyon’s China Doll (5.14a) and Eldorado Canyon’s Iron Monkey (5.14a) this fall while in Colorado. 10/24/08 - Thomas Huber has climbed three summits in Italy's Dolomites, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and B.A.S.E. jumped off two of them in a single day. 10/22/08 - PodClimber.com has produced an exclusive interview with legendary speed climber Hans Florine about his and Yuji Hirayama's October 12, 2008 record-fast ascent of The Nose on El Capitan, Yosemite, California. 10/22/08 - Alex Puccio has climbed two V12 boulder problems and a V11 in Colorado in the last week. 10/21/08 - Vince Anderson has sent a brief report and photo to the Cleanest Line describing a new route on Kangchungtse (a.k.a. Makalu II, 24,850 feet). 10/20/08 - Nicolas Favresse and Sean Villanueva have completed a new free route on the far right side of El Capitan. See a photo gallery from this ascent. 10/16/08 - Chad Kellogg and Dylan Johnson, funded in part by a Lyman Spitzer Award from the American Alpine Club, completed the first ascent of the Southwest Ridge of Siguniang in southwestern China, (VI 5.11 A2 M5 AI3+), 72 pitches. 10/10/08 - Katie Brown has onsighted the Regular Northwest Face (VI 5.12) of Half Dome, completing the 23-pitch route in about nine hours. 10/09/08 - After storms foiled a traditional porter-assisted approach to a striking peak in India, an American quartet regrouped and went ultra-light to bag the likely first ascent of the 17,697-foot summit. 10/08/08 - The French alpinists Aymeric Clouet and Christophe Dumarest have linked eight high peaks in the Écrins Massif in the western Alps by their north faces. 10/08/08 - The tiny nation of Slovenia has lost its second great climber in 2008 to a Himalayan accident. (Updated - 10/09/08) 10/07/08 - Alex Johnson and Jon Glassberg won the 15th annual Hound Ears Bouldering Competition on a splitter day near Boone, North Carolina. 10/03/08 - The British couple John and Anne Arran, veterans of several big new routes on Venezuela’s remote sandstone walls, have completed their “most adventurous big-wall expedition yet”. 10/02/08 - Toni Lamprecht has redpointed a 150-foot “monster route” on the limestone of Kochel in southern Germany that might be as hard as 5.15a. 10/01/08 - The past few days have seen a rush of activity on Europe's hardest boulders, with some familiar names in the heart of the action.
