New Route in Rockies
By Dougald MacDonald

Dave Marra, Dana Ruddy, and Tom Schnugg pioneered the Northwest Face of Mount Belanger in the Canadian Rockies this summer, via a moderately difficult 2,000-foot ice chute. The route takes the left branch of a prominent Y-couloir on Belanger, a 10,236-foot summit in the Fryatt Creek area near Jasper. Shortcutting the 15-mile approach hike by canoeing across the Athabasca River, the trio bivied briefly at the base of the face, climbed the route (passing a short vertical ice crux just beyond the Y-junction), and walked out the same day.
