Chabot, Eiter Win World Cup

By Dougald MacDonald

Alex Chabot of France regained his customary position atop the World Cup winners’ podium at Imst, Austria, while local heroines Angela Eiter and Bettina Schöpf finished one-two among the women.

Chabot, who finished a disappointing ninth at the first World Cup of 2004, beat the Czech Tomás Mrázek and the Swiss climber Cédric Lachat in the final at Imst. Austrian Kilian Fischhuber, who last month flashed a 5.14b, finished fourth. With a first- and second-place finish so far this year, Mrázek tops the overall standings. American Vadim Vinokur finished 21st at the Imst World Cup, and Cody Roth ended up tied for 51st.

The local women put on an amazing performance, with four Austrians competing in the final round of eight and 18-year-old Angela Eiter coming out on top. Belgian Muriel Sarkany was third, and her combined results for the first two World Cups give her the overall lead for the season.
