North American climbers just missed the finals at a World Cup sport-climbing comp in Chamonix, France. Coloradan Emily Harrington finished 10^th in the Chamonix comp, which was won by Austrian Angela Eiter, the World Cup champion last year and undefeated so far this season. Harrington, who just redpointed her second 5.14a in Rifle, is now ranked ninth for the World Cup season, despite competing in only two of the three comps so far this year. She finished fifth in a World Cup in Dresden, Germany, in May.

Meanwhile, Canadian Sean McColl finished 11^th in the men’s comp in Chamonix, his first lead-climbing World Cup. (McColl placed ninth and 13^th in bouldering World Cups last season.) Spain’s Eduard Marin Garcia won the Chamonix comp, which was notable for the rare sight of no Frenchmen in the finals. Seven more World Cup lead-climbing events remain on the 2006 calendar, with four of them in Asia.
