Charlotte Durif Redpoints 5.14d in France

By Amanda Fox

8/19/11 - French climber Charlotte Durif has redpointed her first 5.14d, Les 3P, at Grotte de Galetas in the Verdon Gorge, France. She is likely the only female other than Spain's Josune Bereziartu to have redpointed this grade.

She took 11 attempts to make the redpoint. The route was bolted by Bruno Clement, but Adam Ondra grabbed the first ascent in 2010. Sébastien Bouin made the route's first repeat. Durif sent Les 3P 15 minutes before she turned 21.

According to Durif, the roof line is sustained and strenuous, with two technical cruxes and a powerful bouldering section.

She has climbed up to 5.14c before: In 2009, she completed The Wall and made the first ascent of Pull Over. Right after these ascents, she linked the first four pitches of Ultime Demence in a single push, using a 100-meter rope; the pitches break down to 5.13c, 5.13b, 5.13c, and 5.13a. As one long pitch, she suggested 5.14a. The next day, she linked the first two pitches of Ramirole (5.13b/c, 5.13b).

Date of ascent: August 18, 2011
