David Lama and Juliette Danion won the European Bouldering Championship in Birmigham, England, last weekend. Lama, 16, won the European lead-climbing championship last summer and finished second in the 2006 lead-climbing World Cup series. He was ranked only 16^th worldwide in bouldering competition in 2006, but no podium now appears safe from the young Austrian. Danion, 25, was last year’s runner-up in World Cup bouldering, behind Russian Olga Bibik, who failed to make the final in Birmingham.

In a separate event in Birmingham, competitors attempted to break the world dyno record, leaping from a pair of starting holds to a finishing jug on a 20-degree overhanging wall. Edyta Ropek of Poland set a new women’s record, jumping 217.5 centimeters, or about 7 feet, 1.5 inches, to snag the jug. Sergii Topishko of Ukraine equaled the men’s world record of 270 centimeters: a little over 8 feet, 10 inches.
