First Winter Ascent of Torre Egger

News link: Swiss climbers Stephan Siegrist and Dani Arnold and German Thomas Senf made the first winter ascent of Torre Egger, a 2,685-meter peak in Argentine Patagonia next to Cerro Torre.

The three-day push to the summit occurred in a perfect weather window, extremely rare for the area. After 22 hours of climbing, the team reached the base of the summit and decided to rest for four hours before tackling the infamous ice mushrooms.

After the sun came up, inclement weather started moving in, so the team made a fast push and reached the summit at midday.

Dates of ascent: 8/1/10 - 8/3/10
