German Woman Climbs First V12

By Amanda Fox

1/25/12 - German climber Sarah Seeger has climbed her first V12 with Kalte Sophie, in the Frankenjura. It's reported that Seeger, 30, needed only four days to finish the problem.

Seeger gives a full account of the inclement weather she faced that day on Marmot's website. An excerpt: “Heavy snowfall, strong winds, no sight, and the weather forecast predicting rising temperatures and heavy rain for the afternoon. Not the kind of conditions which make climbing fun."

This is the problem's second female ascent (first by Dorothea Karalus in 2009—below is the video).

In 2009, Seeger became the first woman to climb 5.14b in the Frankenjura (her home crag) with her ascent of Steinbock. Numerous women have climbed V12, but only a handful of women have climbed a confirmed V13.

Date of ascent: January 21, 2012
