Harrington Joins Women of 5.14b Club

By Dan Dewell

Harrington on another 5.14, The 7 P.M.Show, Rifle, Colorado

On a quick trip to Sonora, California, Emily Harrington made an ascent of Burning Down the House, a 5.14b established by her coach, Justen Sjong, at the blocky basalt crag of Jailhouse. Harrington completed the route after roughly 20 attempts over eight days, finally snagging the second ascent on January 27.

Burning Down the House makes three 5.14 redpoints by the Boulder-native since her first, Zulu (5.14a), at Rifle, Colorado, on October 8, 2005. Harrington becomes only the second woman in the United States, after Beth Rodden (The Optimist, Smith Rock, Oregon), to redpoint 5.14b.

Date of Ascent: January 27, 2007
