Kinder Has Tiger Blood (5.14c)

By Amanda Fox

3/29/11 - Joe Kinder completed a new route at the Blank Wall in Utah, naming it Tiger Blood and suggesting 5.14c. Bolted last year by Kinder, he was "a little bummed on the style" due to its lower-angled face (he prefers the steeps), but decided to attempt the route after encouragement from friends.

Featuring "tiny, two-finger pockets, mini-crimps, and bullshit feet," the route was dubbed the "Dave Graham project" and climbs through several V9-V11 boulder problems with a 5.12a start.

On the day Kinder finished the line—his last day of attempts—he blogs that he "started to not give a shit. I was pretty much over it and wanting Tiger Blood to just defeat me so I could leave... But I got through the crux move, and made it to the defining redpoint crux... Stuck it and got to the jug screaming."

See photos and read more here about his take on emotions and climbing.

Date of ascent: March 25, 2011
