Ondra's New Spanish 5.15b

By Amanda Fox

2/17/11 - Adam Ondra has climbed a potential 5.15b, La Capella, in Siurana, Spain. The 50-foot route (bolted by David and Carles Brasco) took nine days of effort overall—two days last year, seven this year. It's "an extremely bouldery route," as Ondra describes it on his 8a.nu scorecard. The hardest section of the route centers around four bolts: It starts with a V7/8 boulder problem, followed by two V12/13 sections with no good rests. Then a final V10 problem leads to a tricky move under the anchors.

Ondra suggests 5.15b for the route: "Bearing in mind the effort, it could be 9b, but I am not sure at all. Would have been definitely 9b if I hadn't figured out a better sequence for the lower crux... Time will tell."

La Capella is the 18-year-old's fourth route 5.15a or higher, including Chris Sharma's Golpe de Estado (5.15b), also at Siurana. If confirmed, it would be one of very few 5.15bs in the world.
