Paul Robinson: 2nd Ascent of Psychedelic (5.14c/d)

By Dougald MacDonald / The Mountain World

News Link: Best known for his bouldering — he was national champion in 2008 — Paul Robinson has completed the second ascent of Psychedelic (5.14c/d), eight years after Dave Graham first climbed the route. In a short interview with Peter Beal at Mountainsandwater.com, Robinson described the 60-foot limestone climb near St. George, Utah, as a boulderer’s route: “a V6 boulder to a V13 boulder to about 30 feet of 13a to the top.”

The ascent marks Robinson’s continued recovery from a badly broken ankle last October; Psychedelic was at the top of a hit list of climbs to attempt in 2009 that he posted at his blog at the end of December. Other 5.14 climbs on the list include The Present and Breakin the Law, also in Utah, as well as a certain unrepeated deep-water solo in Mallorca: Es Pontas (5.15?).

Check out the difficulties on Psychedelic in this video of Dave Graham on the route:

Date of Ascent: March 24, 2009
