Four members of a Ukrainian expedition climbed a new route on the Northwest Face of Great Trango Tower (20,415 feet), one of the largest rock walls in the world. The new line tackles the prominent spur to the left of the three existing routes on the 6,000-foot face, all of which were established in 1999 by separate teams of American climbers (Alex Lowe, Jared Ogden and Mark Synnott), Russians and Germans. The Ukrainians reached the West Summit of Trango on August 2 and took two and a half days to descend during a storm.
