The Russians are Coming!
By Dougald MacDonald

Sixteen-year-old Vasya Vorotnikov has redpointed Steady Slobbin’ (5.14b) at Rumney. This is the hardest climb yet for the young Russian, who lives in Nashua, New Hampshire, just down the highway from New England's top sport crag. Vorotnikov has also climbed two 5.14a routes at Rumney, Parallel Universe and Dr. No (considered easy for the grade), as well as high-end 5.13s in New Hampshire and Colorado.

Vasya’s younger sister, Nadya Vorotnikova, is also an impressively strong climber—she won the age 12-13 category at the USA Climbing Junior Nationals last summer. As foreign citizens, neither qualifies for the U.S. team, but that may change—the Vorotnikovs are hoping to become permanent residents of the U.S. soon.
