On May 8, Daniel Woods nabbed the second ascent of Dave Graham’s Suspension of Disbelief (V13), a techy 18-foot overhanging arête near Eldorado Springs Canyon, Colorado, put up by Dave Graham on November 26, 2005. What started as a stand start, V12, turned into a sit-start, V13, with an additional “very technical, core-dependent, five moves into the stand,” says Steve Woods, Daniel’s father, who witnessed both Graham’s and Daniel Woods’ sends. The problem also includes a “committing redpoint crux dyno to the lip” off of some not very secure hand and feet holds. The landing is not ideal either, as there is a small creek and logs right underneath, which can be covered by pads.

Daniel Woods made the stand start the same day Graham bagged the full line, but couldn’t erase the whole sit-start from his mind, so he made the 45-minute uphill slog seven more times, often accompanied by partner in crime Paul Robinson. “We both put many days into the climb, and it pretty much became an obsession over our lives,” Robinson said. Then, Woods finally defeated his nemesis.

Date of ascent: May 8, 2007
