From the moment I donned the PATAGONIA ICE FIELD ($400, patagonia.com), I was so impressed by its minimalist style that I wondered how technical it could really be. However, as I put this insulated hardshell through its paces on chilly, damp approaches, I recognized it as a true performer. With a 2.5-layer recycled polyester ripstop shell (reinforced at elbows, lower arms, and around the lower back), H2No waterproof barrier plus water-repellent finish, continuous-filament insulation, coated external zippers, a sleek, two-way-adjustable hood, and pit zips, the Ice Field delivers warmth and comfort in all sorts of gnarly conditions. It’s solid for everything from cold-drip belays, to frigid slogs, to weekends on the town — shickading!
