A legendary player in Hueco Tanks State Park passed away on August 2nd, at 66 years of age. Pedro Zavala, Jr., otherwise known as “Hueco Pete,” owned and operated the Hueco Tanks Country Store outside the park until 2000, when governmental regulations forced him to close his doors. Pete served the visiting climbing community at Hueco Tanks, providing camping, food, and camaraderie for 18 years, and saw its strongest years in the 1990s when upwards of 200 climbers would call Pete’s scrappy dirt lot “home” each night.
Pete was a veteran of the Navy and lived most of his life near El Paso, Texas. He is survived by his wife Enriqueta “Queta” Zavala, his son Sergio, daughters Maria Leticia Colfer and Sandra Zavala-Brabandt, 10 grandchildren, and two beautiful great-grandchildren.
