Jules Cartwright Killed in Alps

Jules Cartwright, 29, one of the foremost British alpinists of his generation, was killed in a fall from the Piz Badile in Switzerland, along with his client, Julie Colverd, a 43-year-old Scottish police officer. The two were roped together on the approach to the Cassin Route on the Northeast Face when they fell.

Along with several first ascents in the Alps, Cartwright made notable super-alpine climbs and attempts around the world, earning him two nominations for France’s annual Piolet d’Or prize for mountaineering. In 2000, he and Ian Parnell climbed The Knowledge, a new route paralleling the Moonflower Buttress on the North Face of Mount Hunter in Alaska. The following year, he and Rich Cross made a 10-day, alpine-style ascent of the 4,000-meter Northwest Ridge of Ama Dablam in Nepal.
