Reese Martin Killed Paragliding

Longtime climber and climbing activist Reese Martin III was killed July 9 in a paragliding accident in Washington State. Martin, 49, was competing in the Chelan Cross Country Classic when his paraglider crashed and he was killed on impact.

Martin, an environmental engineer, lived in Aspen, Colorado, with his wife, Charlotte Fox. He started climbing in 1971 and had done it all, from cragging to 8,000-meter mountaineering. He has put up more than 100 new routes and was recently happily developing a new crag near Independence Pass, above Aspen.

Martin, who has replaced hundreds of bolts in cooperation with the American Safe Climbing Association, also was a Director and Regional Coordinator of the Access Fund.
