Siberian Shindig

Adventurers, Climbers and Local Mountain Zealots mark your Calendars! Black Diamond, Sterling Ropes, La Sportiva and Mountaineers Books present “Siberian Shindig!” a slide show by Roxanna Brock.

The show covers Heidi Wirtz and Roxanna Brock’s June 2005 North Face sponsored expedition to the remote Barun Valley of the Sayan Mountains in Siberia, Russia.  At a remote climbing area known as Kupol-Stol, the ladies made the first ascent of Pofigo 5.12, the only traditional route in the region. Ticks with encephalitis; mosquitoes and horseflies on constant attack; little food and an 18-year old guide were a few of the obstacles the two encountered. Also featured in the show is climbing on Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world,  holding more water than all five Great Lakes.  

The journey brought awareness and funding to The City Bridge Foundation, helping to provide cancer medicine and treatment for children suffering from aplastic anemia due to pollution in the region.

"We don't have women like you here," exclaimed local elite climber Pavel Trofimov. Come hear the story about the all-women ascent by the two women the Russians call "heroes."
