Public Access Update at Teton Ice Park

Public access to the Teton Ice Park at Grand Targhee Resort has opened up once again, but on a limited basis due to USFS requirements.

All of those wishing to climb at the ice park will need to go through an orientation and pay either a day-use or seasonal membership fee (Day use is $10/person, seasonal membership is $40/person). All users will need to demonstrate that they can belay properly, set up a top-rope anchor and protect themselves from a fall while doing it, and demonstrate that they have the proper equipment to climb in the ice park.

Access will be supervised by guides while at the ice park teaching classes and by Teton Ice Park Ambassadors- volunteers who will monitor access to the ice park while there climbing. Ambassadors will go through a training session to give them basic skills to be able to administer the ice park orientation for members and day users, help coordinate rescues, and perform other ice park operations.

Saturday January 9, 2010, the Teton Ice Park will hold its first round of orientations for members and day users starting at 12:30pm. Sunday January 10, 2010 will be two more sessions – one at 9am and at 12:30pm. Participants should meet at the Activities Center at Grand Targhee at the respective time.

Once becoming a Member of the Teton Ice Park users can access the ice park’s online calendar to see when the ice park is open and staffed. Members will also be able to take advantage of discounts from several area business including:

Temporary Shut Down

Dear Friends,

As of today the Caribou-Targhee National Forest has once again shut down the Teton Ice Park. This closure includes ALL climbing, including guided access, until they can thoroughly review our insurance policy. We will be working hard to make sure that this review happens in a timely manner so that we can continue to operate and provide an important amenity for the Tetons.

On the positive side, we think that we may have finally convinced the Forest Supervisor for Caribou-Targhee that 1) we have worked very hard to manage the risk of the Teton Ice Park and 2) the ice park will be a benefit to the Forest, providing a place for users to improve skills thereby reducing the risk of climbing in other venues.
