The Road - the new film by Mike Call and MC Productions

— Jansen Gunderson

The big screen premier

"On the big screen; that's the way climbing films should be seen," said Ivan Greene, who flew out to Salt Lake City from New York for the premier of “The Road,” the new film by Mike Call and MC Productions, as presented by Climbing Magazine.

About 200 people showed up for the premier, which was held at the Tower Theater in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, May 28. The showing was preceded by an eclectic multimedia presentation by Jason Kehl, highlights of the Professional Climbers Association (PCA) Boulder Brawl 2003 at the Spot Gym in Boulder, CO, and a film by Wills Young that showcased Lisa Rands sending problems from her V10 ticklist, which is written on Hello Kitty stationery.

“The Road” is Mike Call's ninth climbing film and, as with his previous films, sets a new standard for the genre. The film offers a tour of some of the lesser-known bouldering in Southern Illinois, the Gunks, Hueco Tanks, Bishop, and Utah. As many of the featured problems are first ascents, “The Road” offers an intimate look into each area's local scene, and praises the efforts of the developers.

The PCA hosted a wrap party at Oddfellow Hall following the showing. In true PCA style, guests enjoyed drinks and thumping hip-hop and house music well into the early morning.
