Seventh Annual Golden Piton Awards Presented by Climbing Magazine & Marmot

By Jordan Campbell / marmot.com

On January 22, 2009, from 5-6 pm at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City, Marmot will be hosting Climbing Magazine’s seventh-annual Golden Piton Awards at the Marmot trade show booth. Both companies are each backed by more than 30 years of climbing and mountaineering heritage.

The Golden Piton was established in 2002 as an annual award given by the editors at Climbing Magazine; it recognizes remarkable achievement across multiple disciplines of climbing. Unlike the Piolet d’or or other awards-by-peer-review, the Golden Piton is awarded based on the experience of the editorial team at Climbing: the editorial staff picks the winners and runners-up from a pool of names collected from Climbing Magazine’s news well — Hot Flashes — and from soliciting the opinions from top contributing writers and news writers.

This year’s awards include the categories of sport climbing, bouldering, traditional climbing, alpine climbing, rookie of the year, humanitarian of the year, and solo climbing. Golden Piton winners will be announced at the Marmot booth in conjunction with a multimedia slideshow presentation featuring the award-winning climbers and their signature accomplishments.
