Round Two for Honnold: Big Solo Day in Zion

3/18/13 - Three days after a big wall–packed mission in Zion last week with Tommy Caldwell, Alex Honnold ventured back to climb three more routes, this time solo.

In a 12-hour day, Honnold free soloed Moonlight Buttress (5.12d, though he feels it's closer to 5.12c), Monkeyfinger (5.12b), and Shune's Buttress (5.11+), totaling about 27 pitches. Each route took about an hour to ascend. "The time was mostly spent hiking down from everything," rather than doing the traditional rappels on Monkeyfinger and Shune's Buttress, Honnold says.

"It was kind of an epic day," he said in an email Friday. "I'm plum tuckered out today."

Date of ascent: March 14, 2013
