Chris Sharma, whose attention has been focused on towering 5.15 sport routes, demonstrated on Saturday that he still has the power and cool-headed competitiveness to beat America’s best in a head-to-head bouldering comp. Sharma was the only man to complete a problem in the final round of the Earth Treks Roc Comp, presented by Mountain Hardwear, topping out on the first problem and flashing the third. That left the two most dominant boulderers in the U.S., Paul Robinson and Daniel Woods, battling for the final podium spots.

In the above video, Sharma flashes Problem No. 3 to seal his win.

Among the women, it was a familiar battle between the two Alex’s: Puccio and Johnson. Problem No. 2 made the difference, with Puccio scoring two more holds for the win. Veteran Lisa Rands returned to the podium with a superb effort to outfight youngster Francesca Metcalf.

The Earth Treks Rock Comp, held April 23–24 in Maryland, is the first of three 2010 events in the Unified Bouldering Championships, organized by NE2C Productions. With an $11,000 purse, the Earth Treks event drew most of the country’s top competitors, and the same should be true at the second event, August 2–4, in conjunction with the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City.
