Sharma, Woods Take 1st and 2nd in Deep Water Solo Comp

7/21/14 - Chris Sharma won the Red Bull Creepers psicobloc (deep water soloing) competition in Spain on Saturday. Fourteen climbers competed in the invitational event, dueling on two routes up the broad central arch of the 1,000-year-old Puente la Reina bridge in northern Spain. The route crested about 36 feet above the Arga River.

In the semifinals, before an estimated 2,500 spectators, Sharma bested Nalle Hukkataival from Finland, and Daniel Woods beat the Kazakh/Russian bouldering champion Rustam Gelmanov. Sharma then beat Woods in the final, climbing out to the top of the bridge for a third time. American Dave Graham also competed, along with a number of strong Spanish climbers.

For the American contestants, the Red Bull comp was a good warm-up for the second Psicobloc Masters competition in Park City, Utah, organized in part by Sharma. The finals of that event, coinciding with the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City, will take place August 8.
