Shiraishi Youngest to Climb 5.14c
10/29/12 - Ashima Shiraishi upped the game after her ascents of two Red River Gorge 5.14a's last week: This weekend, she climbed two 5.14c's in two days, becoming the youngest person to climb the grade.
On Friday, October 26, the day before leaving the Red, 11-year-old Shiraishi climbed Southern Smoke (5.14c) at the Bob Marley Crag in the Pendergrass Murray Recreational Preserve. Then, a day later, she sent Lucifer (5.14c) at the Purgatory, also in the PMRP. Both were second female ascents; Sasha DiGiulian redpointed both routes in spring 2011.
Shiraishi climbed 5.14 for the first time this trip when she flashed Omaha Beach (5.14a) and redpointed God's Own Stone (5.14a) her second try.
Joe Kinder bolted and redpointed Southern Smoke in 2008; the route is the direct start to Ultra-Perm (5.13d). Lucifer is a 100-foot, very bouldery line bolted and climbed by Mike Doyle in 2006.
Dates of ascents: October 26-27, 2012
