You’ve seen the photos and read the stories, now it’s time to experience the amazing crack climbing of Indian Creek, Utah for yourself. The three-day, all-inclusive Splitter Camps, presented by Moab Desert Adventures (and sponsored by Montrail, Mountain Hardwear, Trango, and Climbing Magazine) will be held four times in 2007: April 28-30, May 5-7, September 29-October 1, and October 6-8. The cost is only $575.
The camps, instructed by some of the most experienced crack climbers in the sport, will help you master the unique techniques required to climb the Creek’s world-famous splitter cracks. Don’t worry if you aren’t a crack-climbing ace — the camps’ low guide-to-student ratios of 3:1 afford plenty of time for individual attention. The Splitter Camp guides have a close affinity with the area, and this creates a unique guiding experience because not only are they teaching you the necessary techniques, but they are also passing on their enthusiasm and passion for Indian Creek and its climbing. Plan to camp and eat under the open sky, but don’t expect your standard dirtbag climbing trip. Wake up and debrief your goals for the day with your coach. Spend the next several hours pushing your level by a grade, two (three?) with techniques you hardly knew existed: ring locks, finger stacks, chicken wings. Hungry yet? Get back to camp in time for a catered gourmet meal that will satisfy your raging metabolism. Then watch the desert stars come out as your evening’s fireside discussion focuses on stewardship — how you can make a difference towards the future of Indian Creek and other climbing areas. To register, go to http://moabdesertadventures.com/splittercamps.html and download and complete the registration form, waiver, and questionnaire, and send in together with your deposit. Don’t wait too long, these are popular events and numbers are limited!
