Stöhr, Gelmanov are 2012 Boulder World Cup Champs

8/27/12 - The 2012 World Cup series continued August 26 in Munich, Germany, with its sixth and final bouldering competition of the season.

Dmitry Sharafutdinov and Akiyo Noguchi took home gold medals in this particular event, but it was Rustam Gelmanov and Anna Stöhr who secured first place for the overall 2012 Bouldering World Cup standings.

Men's finals was a close competition, with Sharafutdinov edging out second-place finisher Sean McColl. Each topped out the four finals problems. Jakob Schubert (third place) and Gelmanov (fourth) each topped out three climbs, followed by Rei Sugimoto and Stewart Watson, who each finished two problems.

Surprisingly, reigning World Cup champion Kilian Fischhuber failed to make semi-finals. Prior to this event, he was ranked first, but this dropped him to second. Gelmanov picked up first place, and Schubert ranked third overall.

The women's competition was closer, with five of the six women topping out all four finals problems. With fewer attempts, Noguchi narrowly beat Stöhr and Juliane Wurm (third place). Melissa Le Neve and Anna Gallyamova finished fourth and fifth. Sixth-place finisher Mélanie Sandoz did not finish any finals problems.

Noguchi's win wasn't enough to kick Stöhr out of first place in rankings, but did bring her own status up to second from third. Shauna Coxsey was previously in second, but she broke her leg in July, thus ruling out any more competitions in the near future; she finished third overall.

Alex Puccio competed in Munich, finishing 10th. She has been active on the World Cup circuit this year, and placed fifth overall in rankings. In 2011, Puccio received a bronze medal for the entire circuit, becoming the first American to stand on the podium in overall rankings.

Bouldering World Cups are over for the year, but these competitors will show up once more for the Arco Rockmaster in Arco, Italy, on September 2, and the World Championships on September 16 in Paris, France. There are six more lead and speed climbing events for the 2012 season.
