Vermont Crag Saved

A climbers’ group in Vermont has purchased the Bolton Quarry, a popular resource for both ice and rock climbing near Burlington. The 100-foot-high crag and surrounding 30 acres of land were purchased by the Climbing Resource Access Group of Vermont (CRAG-VT), with funding from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, the Vermont Recreation Trails Grant Program, the Access Fund, Climb High, and climber donations. Climbers had used the cliff for years, but access was limited because of concerns by landowners and neighbors. Now, Bolton Quarry will be permanently open to climbers under a conservation easement.

Parking in the area is still a major concern, however, and climbers are urged to visit www.cragvt.org for guidelines on parking and approaches to the cliff. New parking is expected to be developed in the spring.
