8/15/13 - The biggest annual comp for young climbers, the IFSC World Youth Championships, gets under way today, and for the first time it's happening in North America. Opening ceremonies for the five-day lead- and speed-climbing event are tonight at the Boulders Climbing Gym on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The gym in Central Saanich, B.C. has walls up to nearly 60 feet high.
Nearly 500 climbers in three age categories (ages 14 to 19), representing 35 countries, will be competing. All events will be webcast live by IFSC TV.
The IFSC also has announced that. during the event, a check for $16,000 will be given to the BC Cancer Foundation on behalf of Climbers Against Cancer. This is the third large donation made by Climbers Against Cancer, a worldwide organization founded by British climber and cancer patient John Ellison.
