 Copa Catalana Bouldering Comp
Photos by Carlos Hernandez — Carlosbcn.com — La Salle Enginyeria /Arquitectura hosted the Copa Catalana and University Rock Climbing Championships Saturday May 12, 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. The competition saw about 80 competitors from 7 to 50 years old. The bouldering competition was held in an immense hall which made it ideal for spectators. Photos by Devaki Murch — Over 50 women participants attended the first annual women's climbing weekend April 28-29, 2007, at Joshua Tree National Park. The Sterling Rope/Peak Rescue Inst. Women's Climbing Weekend, was hot in more ways than one! With temps soaring into the 90s, the warrior women participated at many locations throughout the park attending clinics on basic climbing skills, placing gear, building anchors, and leading. Saturday's climbing was followed up with a barbecue dinner, and party in the park featuring a raffle of gear and clothing and a slideshow from pictures taken throughout the day. Photos by Devaki Murch — March 30-April 1- The AAC Mountain Fest drew hundreds of climbers to Bend and to nearby Smith Rock for clinics with top climbers, including Chris Sharma, Lynn Hill, Tommy Caldwell, Beth Rodden, Arno Ilgner, Steve House, Jack Tackle, Josh Wharton, Kate Rutherford, Vince Anderson, Chris Lindner, and Katie Brown, along with slide shows by Anderson, House, Caldwell, and Rodden. “The annual meeting was the best ever in the history of the club,” said Jack Tackle, who, it must be said, is not quite old enough to know for sure.  d'Escalada en Bloc a Catalunya 2007

February 24th, the last Saturday of the month, was a chilly but prefect day for bouldering, and a good time was had by all who attended. Like last year, climbers were responsible for choosing which category they wish to compete in. The competition took place entirely on North Mountain with the exception of the Advanced and Mutant categories. Competitors had all day to try as many problems as they wanted and were scored by their 6 hardest problems completed. Images by Devaki Murch - The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation raised just over $134,000 for ovarian cancer research at their fifth annual Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life in Salt Lake City. The four-day rock climbing fundraising event, held September 14 – 17, attracted women, men, and children of all ages and climbing ability levels from 20 different states. HERA donates at least 85 percent of the money raised to ovarian cancer research and education. In some years that number has been as high as 95 percent. This year’s top fundraisers were: 1. Marci Reardon, Los Angeles, CA — $11,100.00; 2. Lara Usinowicz, Denver, CO — $8,300.00; 3. Samantha Lockwood, Philadelphia, PA — $7,530.95. Read Climbing.com's Recap of the event. Attendees got a glimpse of climbing in Siberia from Patagonia ambassador Brittany Griffith, as well as a raucous show-and-tell by climber and MC extraordinaire Timmy O’Neill at Saturday night’s bash at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Joshua Tree. www.bencarlson.net — Based in New York City Ben works as a lighting designer for television. He began climbing at age 12, with the Boy Scouts, and started photographing climbers around the Northeast. Ben has photographed climbers all over the world and prefers a simple, tiny point-and-shoot Canon SD400 digital camera, because if its size and portability, but recently invested in a digital SLR. Ben is also a licensed rock and ice climbing guide with the state of NY. He hopes one day to make a living following his passion, photographing and documenting climbers and climbing. The sun was barely up, but the staging area for the third and final round of the Triple Crown Bouldering Series, held at The Stone Fort (formerly: Little Rock City) was already packed and poised. The hyper-focused and smoothly professional Kate Reese displayed for the third time why she is the reigning Triple Crown Queen, coolly climbing her way to a third victory in the 2006 series and sealing her second overall win over the up-and-coming Sasha DiGiulian. Visiting French strongman Tony Lamiche raged. He bested overall series winner Paul Robinson by 3000 points and climbed a number of longstanding projects in the field, leaving locals with a new understanding of what is possible. Photos by Cooper Roberts - The lack of a crowd at Castle Hill is odd considering that this area is filled with hundreds of contorted limestone blocks perfectly sculpted for bouldering; not to mention grassy landings that roll right to the base of the boulders and an unforgettable landscape. The basin itself is dived into three main sectors: Quantum Field, Spittle Hill, and Flock Hill. Take away a bit of texture, add a ton of pockets and what's left is a climbing style reminiscent of the French bouldering mecca Fontainebleau.  HP40 Triple Crown 2006

This is the place where the term “sloper-jug” was born. The boulders have been sculpted into wild shapes reminiscent of mushroom caps and brain coral; yet these pillowy features belie the complexity of the climbing. Suitors must learn to coordinate their movements—hands, toes, knees, and elbows—to traipse efficiently up or across the fantastic cauliflower undulations. Justin Jaeger enjoys taking photos of his friends while climbing, and subsequently exploiting the photos to poke fun at them. He makes no claim to greatness; rather, he enjoys horrifying "real" photographers by explaining his use of inexpensive film, one-hour drug-store developing and the infamous “Photo CD” option to get his images into the digital realm. The following collection is a sacrificial offering to help subsequent photographers feel much more confident and dignified in their work. Photographs by Devaki Murch — On October 13-15 hundreds of climbers from around the world descended on the Red River Gorge, East of Lexington, Kentucky for Rocktoberfest 2006. Miguel's and Torrent/Mark's Mountain Barbecue hosted parties every night. The event will kicked Friday night October 13th at Miguel's with the Reel Rock Film Tour with premiers of First Ascent & Dosage Vol. 4. On Saturday the day started off with a Yoga session, a Warrior's Way Rock Climbing Clinic by Arno Ilgner, Learn how to make or keep your dog a great crag companion - presented by Janet Caine of Hug-a-Pup Dog Training, and a Photography Clinic by presented by Wes Allen. On Saturday night October 14th, Jason Kehl presented his Never Let Go slideshow at Torrent followed by a Dyno-comp + party - food, beer, raffle, etc ... Finally, on Sunday October 15th, Katie Brown presented a Girl's Climbing Clinic, and Bart Bledsoe presented an Aid Climbing Clinic. The buses rolled upward through the immaculate neighborhood of Hound Ears, each disgorging its contents, all a bit dazed from the ride and individual prayers to Lord Caffeine. 400+ optimists shuffled up the final hill, huffing, hoping, and casting furtive glances at the sky above, as if to say “just give us a chance ...”  2006 Rifle Clean-up by Devaki Murch
September 30, 2006 - It is a long-standing tradition here at Climbing to aid in keeping Rifle Mountain Park clean for climbers and our combined public perception. Every year at the end of September we host the annual Rifle clean-up, during which climbers are invited to help clean the park and later enjoy a BBQ and party courtesy of Climbing. In the past the clean-up has consisted of picking up trash and pulling weeds. This year we had bigger plans! Perhaps nowhere else on Earth can you find a crag so inextricably linked with world history. For example, a favorite climb, Goblin (5.10c), boasts a forearm-sized hole at mid-height. Here, as your arm reaches into the Bunker's cold bowels, you can't help but be reminded that during the Berlin air raids, as many as 18,000 civilians huddled inside with only one hour of oxygen if the power was cut. (The interior walls were painted with white phosphorus -- itself extremely toxic -- which glowed during power outages.) In the last few weeks of the war, as the Russians closed in, Berliners amassed in these bunkers for weeks on end. Thousands committed suicide. Check out pictures of the 3rd annual Crested Butte Bouldering Bonanza held at the Skyland Boulders. Crested Butte, is a festival town in the summer. Not on the scale that Telluride is, but the same energy just more chill. Tourism is the bread and butter for CB. One weekend town will be full of mountain bikers, the next artists, the following wildflower enthusiasts. Heck, we even have a mushroom festival. The 13th Annual International Climbers' Festival was held July 5th through the 9th featuring slideshows, clinics, trade fair, parties and of course world-class climbing. Lander is a world-class sport-climbing destination, home of the legendary Wild Iris and the ever-popular Sinks Canyon. This year featured Patagonia Ambassador Sonnie Trotter as the keynote presenter. There was also slideshows by local NOLS instructor and professional adventure photographer Dave Anderson, Zion guru Mike Anderson, and clinics by Arno Ilgner and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. On August 11, some of the strongest climbers in the United States congregated in Salt Lake City at The Front Climbing Club, for SENDFEST. This was the second annual competition held during the Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow (an event attended by many of the country’s top sponsored athletes). There were also some surprise darkhorse climbers, like Brian Kim, Tyler Haack, Patrick Luther, and Tyler Davis; familiar faces, like Chris Sharma, Daniel Woods, and Obe Carrion — yes, he’s out of retirement; and the young guns destined to make Hot Flashes news, Paul Robinson, Jon Cardwell, and Tyler Landman (the U.K. phenom who’s been tearing up Colorado this summer).
