Bouldering Castle Hill, New Zealand
Photos by Cooper Roberts - The lack of a crowd at Castle Hill is odd considering that this area is filled with hundreds of contorted limestone blocks perfectly sculpted for bouldering; not to mention grassy landings that roll right to the base of the boulders and an unforgettable landscape. The basin itself is dived into three main sectors: Quantum Field, Spittle Hill, and Flock Hill. Take away a bit of texture, add a ton of pockets and what's left is a climbing style reminiscent of the French bouldering mecca Fontainebleau.

Boulderers who enjoy the finesse and subtlety of less steep lines will fall in love with Quantum and Spittle; here you can find some of the most stunning highballs, slabs, and "technically steep" problems you have ever seen. For those who needs a bit more grrr, Flock Hill will be the answer to your burly dreams. But before rushing to your travel agent, understand this disclaimer: the grading here is not conducive to big egos. Unless you are some sort of limestone god, expect to be hammered on numerous occasions. So shed the ego, buy a ticket, grab a Polaroid, and don't lower your expectations; Castle Hill will not disappoint.
