HERA Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life Salt Lake City
Images by Devaki Murch - The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation raised just over $134,000 for ovarian cancer research at their fifth annual Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life in Salt Lake City. The four-day rock climbing fundraising event, held September 14 – 17, attracted women, men, and children of all ages and climbing ability levels from 20 different states. HERA donates at least 85 percent of the money raised to ovarian cancer research and education. In some years that number has been as high as 95 percent. This year’s top fundraisers were: 1. Marci Reardon, Los Angeles, CA — $11,100.00; 2. Lara Usinowicz, Denver, CO — $8,300.00; 3. Samantha Lockwood, Philadelphia, PA — $7,530.95. Read Climbing.com's Recap of the event. Triple Crown Finale - Stone Fort - December 2nd, 2006
182 Photos by Brian Burnham. The sun was barely up, but the staging area for the third and final round of the Triple Crown Bouldering Series, held at The Stone Fort (formerly: Little Rock City) was already packed and poised. The hyper-focused and smoothly professional Kate Reese displayed for the third time why she is the reigning Triple Crown Queen, coolly climbing her way to a third victory in the 2006 series and sealing her second overall win over the up-and-coming Sasha DiGiulian. Visiting French strongman Tony Lamiche raged. He bested overall series winner Paul Robinson by 3000 points and climbed a number of longstanding projects in the field, leaving locals with a new understanding of what is possible. Bouldering Castle Hill, New Zealand
Photos by Cooper Roberts - The lack of a crowd at Castle Hill is odd considering that this area is filled with hundreds of contorted limestone blocks perfectly sculpted for bouldering; not to mention grassy landings that roll right to the base of the boulders and an unforgettable landscape. The basin itself is dived into three main sectors: Quantum Field, Spittle Hill, and Flock Hill. Take away a bit of texture, add a ton of pockets and what's left is a climbing style reminiscent of the French bouldering mecca Fontainebleau.
HP40 Triple Crown 2006
Photos by Brian Burnaham - HorsePens 40 is available 360+ days a year, thanks to the friendly Schultz family (www.hp40.com), who bought these forty acres 5 years ago and have been accommodating climbers since. This is the place where the term “sloper-jug” was born. The boulders have been sculpted into wild shapes reminiscent of mushroom caps and brain coral; yet these pillowy features belie the complexity of the climbing. Suitors must learn to coordinate their movements—hands, toes, knees, and elbows—to traipse efficiently up or across the fantastic cauliflower undulations. Read the event recap by Alex Fitzner
Justin Jaeger's Collection of Classic Boulder Problems
Justin Jaeger enjoys taking photos of his friends while climbing, and subsequently exploiting the photos to poke fun at them. He makes no claim to greatness; rather, he enjoys horrifying "real" photographers by explaining his use of inexpensive film, one-hour drug-store developing and the infamous “Photo CD” option to get his images into the digital realm. The following collection is a sacrificial offering to help subsequent photographers feel much more confident and dignified in their work. Justin was featured in last months OFF THE WALL 2 in our "Player" profile. [http://www.climbing.com/exclusive/otw2/jaegerplayer1]

Houndears - Triple Crown Bouldering Series 2006
Photos by Brian Burnham - www.cirquevideo.com The day began in typical Boone fashion: foggy, that is, with dense, dark clouds rolling overhead, threatening to punish the cheery energy of the Friday night pre-comp barbecue. The buses rolled upward through the immaculate neighborhood of Hound Ears, each disgorging its contents, all a bit dazed from the ride and individual prayers to Lord Caffeine. 400+ optimists shuffled up the final hill, huffing, hoping, and casting furtive glances at the sky above, as if to say “just give us a chance ...”
2006 Rifle Clean-up by Devaki Murch
September 30, 2006 - It is a long-standing tradition here at Climbing to aid in keeping Rifle Mountain Park clean for climbers and our combined public perception. Every year at the end of September we host the annual Rifle clean-up, during which climbers are invited to help clean the park and later enjoy a BBQ and party courtesy of Climbing. In the past the clean-up has consisted of picking up trash and pulling weeds. This year we had bigger plans! Read the Event Recap
The Bunker in Berlin Germany, 2006 - Images by Traveler Taj Terpening
Perhaps nowhere else on Earth can you find a crag so inextricably linked with world history. For example, a favorite climb, Goblin (5.10c), boasts a forearm-sized hole at mid-height. Here, as your arm reaches into the Bunker's cold bowels, you can't help but be reminded that during the Berlin air raids, as many as 18,000 civilians huddled inside with only one hour of oxygen if the power was cut. (The interior walls were painted with white phosphorus -- itself extremely toxic -- which glowed during power outages.) In the last few weeks of the war, as the Russians closed in, Berliners amassed in these bunkers for weeks on end. Thousands committed suicide. Crested Butte Bouldering Bonanza 2006
Check out pictures of the 3rd annual Crested Butte Bouldering Bonanza held at the Skyland Boulders. Crested Butte, is a festival town in the summer. Not on the scale that Telluride is, but the same energy just more chill. Tourism is the bread and butter for CB. One weekend town will be full of mountain bikers, the next artists, the following wildflower enthusiasts. Heck, we even have a mushroom festival. Though real estate has become a big thing here they dont have a festival yet. Photos by Cody Blair For more on the 2006 CBBB check out the Video by Ben Scott

year featured Patagonia Ambassador Sonnie Trotter as the keynote presenter.

adventure photographer Dave Anderson, Zion guru Mike Anderson, and clinics

2006 Sendfest Galley
On August 11, some of the strongest climbers in the United States congregated in Salt Lake City at The Front Climbing Club, for SENDFEST. This was the second annual competition held during the Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow (an event attended by many of the country’s top sponsored athletes). There were also some surprise darkhorse climbers, like Brian Kim, Tyler Haack, Patrick Luther, and Tyler Davis; familiar faces, like Chris Sharma, Daniel Woods, and Obe Carrion — yes, he’s out of retirement; and the young guns destined to make Hot Flashes news, Paul Robinson, Jon Cardwell, and Tyler Landman (the U.K. phenom who’s been tearing up Colorado this summer). Devaki Murch - 2006 New River Rendezvous
“This is the Woodstock of climbing festivals,” said Craig Luebben, offwidth master and slide show presenter, after a weekend of absolutely splitter weather, a million feet of climbing, and countless crazywildwierd events. An estimated 700+ climbers attended, and events went off pretty much without a hitch, with comp winners walking away with wads of cash and clinic attendees with precious gems of new knowledge. Mammut Bouldering Championships
New Jersey is short on World-class bouldering, but thanks to the New Jersey Rock Gym's monstrous terrain and "Thunderdome" a portable structure by PYRAMIDE USA, there was some incredible action on March 24th and 25th. As the final stop of the 2006 Mammut Bouldering Championships, the NJ Rock Gym Gravity Brawl did not disappoint. Almost 200 individuals competed, from beginners to pros. The finals for the pros were a spectacle of sights and sounds. Jason Danforth and the NE2C crew kept the action moving at a frenzied pace, giving competition climbing a dynamic new face.W hen the dust finally settled, Daniel Woods and Lizzy Asher stood victoriously atop the podium. 2006 Hueco Rock Rodeo
The Hueco Rock Rodeo, held during the last weekend of February, is by far the loudest, sickest, and most raging outdoor bouldering competition in the nation. Occurring in one of the best boulder fields of North America: Hueco Tanks State Historical Site, Texas. Devaki Murch from PrAna presents a comprehensive view on this year's event with excellent images of sending, chilling, partying and recovering. The finale of this years Rock Rodeo was a pancake breakfast the morning after, presented by PrAna & Climbing Magazine, where half-dead climbers ate their fill of chocolate chip, banana, and strawberry pancakes.
Chris Van Leuven - Colombia
After a summer of overworking, I decided to go on a vacation to Colombia. Why Colombia do you ask? For one, my good friend Katty Guzman lives there and she invited me to stay at her house. Secondly, I wanted my own trip without any traveling companions, so I could relax to the fullest. I heard all the CIA warnings, and took them to heart, but I knew Katty would do her best to keep me from getting mugged or kidnapped. Plus the rumors of steep cracks and bulletproof sandstone made the offer irresistable. More information about climbing in Colombia: www.hostalelvivac.com & monodedo.com
Randall Levensaler - ABS7 National's
The ABS7 Nationals started with in a frenzy. 40 tough finalists competed against the clock and each other, but the problems looked at first to be tougher. The final problems had competitors bouting against technical cruxes and hucking huge final throws for the lip. When the chalk dust settled Daniel Woods grabbed first place, but without solving the last Mens problem nor did any one else. Alex Puccio pushed past top women competitors Angie Payne and Emily Harrington to nab first place by reaching the highest point on problem 4.
Randall Levensaler - ABS7 Citizen's Comp - The Spot
With temperatures in Boulder hovering in the single digits it was a good day to be hanging out at the Spot, climbing or spectating the event. Even though the ABS citizen's event started in the dark without powered the comp continued quietly under generator-powered floodlights. To organizer's relief the power was soon back up, with the DJ laying down the beats and the Espresso machine back on full-throttle spirits were high. ABS citizen's comp participants received, a free BBQ lunch, beer, front row seats to the ABS National Comp, raffle tickets and a party.
Triple Crown Bouldering Series Gallery 2005-2006
Jim Horton and Chad Wykle once again have brought to the Southeast the biggest and badest outdoor bouldering competitions, the Triple Crown Bouldering Series. Hound Ears - October 1st, 2005, Horse Pens 40 - November 5th, 2005, and Little Rock City - January 7th, 2006. These extremely intense competitions provide climbers with anywhere from six to eight hours to climb the 10 hardest problems their body will allow. Text and Photos by Craig Dillenbeck.
