New and Notable: Kayland Hyper Traction - 2010 Gear Guide

Available in fall 2010, the Kayland Hyper Traction is a technical mountaineering boot with a fixed inner boot, and it shines in cold weather. The super-rigid feel here comes courtesy of an ECT Traction composite insole and Kayland Vaporlite Midsole (see below). Combined with toe and heel welts, the Hyper Traction is a perfect mate for rigid, step-in crampons, and is designed to offer high-end control. But more than just a nimble ice boot, the Hyper Traction is a serious cold-weather slog machine, using a suede and 1.6mm Microfiber upper that’s insulated with Primaloft® (double insulation at the toe, where it’s needed most) and waterproofed with eVent®. The water-repellant Neoprene gaitor adds further protection, and the Vibram® Teton outsole offers grip and bite.

  1. STIFF STUFF
The Kayland Vaporlite Midsole is comprised of a variable-density EVA layer and a full-length injected TPU layer, making for a rigid boot than offers powerful edging support and crampon control. The ECT (Engineered Carbon Technology) Traction composite insole ups stiffness (and toughness) even more.
  2. GAITOR DONE
The Hyper Traction’s insulating gaitor employs a Schoeller® waterproofing treatment and a RIRI Aquazip closure in the front, plus a Velcro top flap, to keep your feet dry and warm in the gnarliest conditions.
  3. LOCK DOWN
The Hyper Traction’s lacing system uses a band that circles the ankle and anchors to the laces (Kayland calls this the Ankle Lock System), allowing you to lock down your foot without compromising ankle mobility.
