The Deep End

The new climbing film Perfecto ($29.95, perfectothemovie.com) gives “perfection” new meaning: deep-water soloing (DWS) in Mallorca. This Spanish idyll is quickly becoming the destination, thanks to coverage of Chris Sharma’s visionary FA of the DWS Es Pontas (a possible 5.15), in 2006. Now the producer/ director Mike Call gives us a high-octane look at Mallorca’s other charms: gaping sea caves, classic DWS lines, and the superb sport routes that put the island on the climbing map in the 1990s. Still, as it says in the film, “Climbing with gear in Mallorca is like roping up in Hueco.”
