This May is the 50th anniversary of both the first American ascent on Mt. Everest and the first ascent of the West Ridge (by Americans). National Geographic collaborated with the American Alpine Club at the AAC's annual benefit dinner in February to bring together prominent Everest climbers, including Tom Hornbein, Norman Dyhrenfurth, and Jim Whittaker, to give their thoughts on those ascents, as well as the mountain's evolution and crowding problems.
