An 11-year-old from the Czech Republic is rapidly emerging as one of the brightest lights in European sport climbing. Adam Ondra, who started climbing at age 6, has flashed three 5.13c climbs this year, according to www.8a.nu. Ondra has flashed a dozen other 5.13 routes in the past six months and has redpointed up to 5.13d, at crags in Slovenia, France and Italy. There must be something in the water in Ondra’s hometown of Brno, the Czech city of 400,000 about 75 miles north of Vienna, Austria. According to 8a.nu, Brno resident Silvie Rajfova, the women’s world champion for 14- and 15-year-olds last year, just flashed a 5.13a in Slovenia. And Tomás Mrázek, the best Czech climber, is from the same city.
